How should you go about writing your thesis ?

The definition of thesis

A thesis is an โ€œoriginalโ€ work, which means in theory that it has not been the subject of an article or a thesis in the previous months. This is why, before embarking on a work, it is necessary to ensure that it has not been completed and published, which is the subject of a bibliographical search. There is, however, a certain originality; for example, if an article can be a precursor by describing for the first time a disease, a physiopathological mechanism, a technique, others have only demonstrated the existence of a disease, a mechanism, the interest or applicability of a technology. The goal of a thesis or dissertation must be formulated with sufficient precision to achieve it. If a topic is complex, it should be broken down into a series of easily identifiable subtopics ; some scholars work on a subject throughout their lifetime, in stages. Thus, the articles can complement each other, and the first article can be a synthesis of data from the literature or one or more other data from the results of a prospective study. The original scientific article is the model to which the thesis must approach. All work has a purpose, whether it is researching hypotheses, evaluating, describing, or making comparisons. This work must be done according to a clear method, the results are then exposed and can be commented on. The work elicits at least a few words that highlight its interest, generally, the research can lead to a conclusion… it can be a simple hypothesis or a need to be re-studied in other conditions. Most of the thesis topics fall into the category of original dissertations, these are descriptive studies, experimental studies, comparative studies, comparative studies, evaluations of a procedure, namely the techniques of investigation, treatment, and teaching modality. It can also be an internship dissertation or an internship report. The other types of thesis are bibliographic theses, didactic reviews on a subject, historical memoirs and introspective memoirs.

The content of a thesis

The reference structure of a thesis is that of an original scientific article, and its purpose is to keep the scientific community informed of discoveries that advance science. This structure is adopted by all researchers; any article that does not follow this plan will be rejected by the editorial boards of valuable journals. It’s called the IMRD outline, an acronym for the initials of the four main parts of an essay… but omitting the conclusion. There is also the acronym IMRAD: Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion. In relation to this, the thesis must first have a title, then it must have an introduction. Then there is the method, this describes how the work was done, which is crucial for the reader to appreciate the quality of the method. After the method, there is the presentation of the results. The results are presented as clearly as possible in the form of text, graphs, drawings and tables. The aim is to present and interpret the results, not to comment on them. Readers are responsible for their own critical reflection on these results. It is after the results that the comments and discussions come. This step done, we can proceed to the conclusion, then make a summarizer and put the references.
